Information on Bremen Coffee Bread – History and Tradition
Bremen Coffee Bread is a traditional pastry specialty of the Hanseatic City of Bremen. Its history is closely linked to Bremen’s centuries-old coffee culture. As early as 1673, the Dutchman Jan Jahns van Huisten received permission from the Bremen City Council to open a public coffeehouse. This made Bremen one of the earliest centers of German coffeehouse culture. Over the course of the following centuries, the Hanseatic city developed into a major hub of the European coffee trade. As coffee became more widespread, regional customs surrounding coffee enjoyment also emerged. One of these is the so-called “Kaffeesieren,” as the cozy tradition of drinking coffee is known in Bremen. Traditionally, “Kaffeesieren” includes Bremen’s “Kaffeebrot.” Originally, this was a simple pastry made from white bread, butter, sugar, and cinnamon, toasted until crispy. A particularly distinctive feature is the old Bremen custom of “Stippens”:
The coffee bread is briefly dipped in hot coffee before being enjoyed.
For generations, Bremer Kaffeebrot has been an integral part of the regional coffee tradition. Even today, it’s offered as a typical Bremen specialty and evokes memories of the cozy coffee gatherings of days gone by.
